Brait Pilvik has taken the reins as head of Prototron, Estonia’s first fund for prototypes of smart ideas, from 1 January. Pilvik has previously worked as a marketing and sales project manager at the Science and Business Park Tehnopol, Latitude59 startup conference, and as project lead at the Greenest Summit conference.

“The startup sector plays an important role in the Estonian economy as an employer and taxpayer and as a driver of innovation. It is vital for this ecosystem to be maintained and developed. One way that Swedbank has been able to help develop startups for 12 years now is through the Prototron fund for developing prototypes. Brait’s wide experience in various parts of the landscape means that he has a very good picture of the Estonian startup ecosystem and a strong network within it. His work so far has left a strong and influential footprint, and that is exactly what Prototron needs today. We are very pleased that Brait decided to accept our offer”, said Triin Preem, Startup Segment Manager at Swedbank.

Brait Pilvik has been involved in the startup sector for some ten years, and over that time he has demonstrated how valuable a member of that community he is. His passion and his focus on results have helped dozens of projects to succeed. Having started out as an auditor, he has a lot of experience in creating and growing companies. Pilvik will bring his wide experience and an injection of energy with him to his new role as head of Prototron, and so take the fund to the next level.

“Prototron has by now given more than 1.2 million euros in support to smart business ideas. I believe that this success is down to the strong cooperation between enthusiastic leaders and outstanding partners. The technology sector in Estonia advances not in steps but in leaps, constantly finding new frontiers and new opportunities, and so the Prototron fund must advance in the same way. The goal is to make sure that all innovations and breakthroughs get independent support that allows them to develop without large companies overshadowing them, so preserving their freedom of movement in the next investment round. My goal is to lead the fund in a way, that it would take its place on the global stage”, explained Brait Pilvik.

The Prototron fund grew substantially under its previous head, Jana Budkovskaja, and has now been in operation for 12 years. The founders of the Prototron fund are grateful to Budkovskaja for all her work and wish her well in her new ventures.

Prototron was set up and is overseen by Swedbank, Tallinn University of Technology and the Tehnopol Science and Business Park, and it provides funding for prototypes of technological ideas to bring world-changing ideas and products to market faster. Prototron has provided 1.27 million euros in funding for 98 smart ideas over its 12 years, and the teams supported have then received a further total of more than 85 million euros in subsequent investment rounds. Several partners including the city of Tallinn, Utilitas, the Centre for Environmental Investments and many others have contributed to the Prototron teams.

How friendly AI friend is

artbreeder image of Prototron AI
Leading figures in the field of artificial intelligence development, including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, are proposing a pause in the development of AI technologies until reliable security protocols are developed and implemented. As a highly technological foundation, we believe that the most effective way to protect ourselves is to stay informed about what is happening.

The first thing we did after reading the open letter and some background information was to ask GPT 3.0 what it thinks about the threat to humanity from future versions of itself. Unfortunately, there is nothing new about what futurists were saying 20 years ago, what education specialists are saying, and what we all know: the threat of technology begins in the mind of the person trying to turn it into a tool to achieve their own, and sometimes, unfortunately, even military goals.

Yes, AI can be used for disinformation. Yes, today’s AI tools can violate your privacy – read the disclaimers “Developers can read your texts for AI development purposes”. The threat of more global security when AI can be used for cyber attacks. But what is currently being hyped in the media is the rise of inequality: if access to AI tools is limited to certain segments of society, this will further exacerbate the segregation of access to technology, reliable information, and as a result, to benefits. Hence the completely justified threat of job loss – automation, robotisation is already affecting the employment structure in industry (welders are replaced by welding robot operators, for example).

The released AI language model GPT 3.0 has drawn our attention to the fact that white-collar work can be done by machines much faster and sometimes even better, including written and oral translations, analytics and forecasting, content creation, information search and analysis, and optimization of many processes. Of course, it’s frightening to think about what will be left for us to do. Especially if AI becomes a black box for us, where it’s unclear what and under what conditions goes in.

The most contradictory aspect of AI technology is that its creators somehow choose the information that is fed to the machine, build the structure of evaluations, self-analysis, monitoring, select experts, on the basis of whose remarks further infrastructure is built. The popular language learning app Duolingvo already works with GPT 4.0 technology, and the government of Iceland has initiated a program to preserve the Icelandic language in cooperation with OpenAI based on GPT 4.0.

Returning to the open letter, it’s a perfect illustration of what happens to information as it moves from medium to medium. The letter calls for a halt to the use of more advanced technologies than GPT 4.0 until regulations are created for data selection, self-analysis, correction, and rules of AI usage. However, some specialists have already disputed the document, claiming they didn’t sign it, and some signature certificates are invalid. Signatures were collected with the argument that Elon Musk even signed it, so why don’t you? Mr. Musk, as we know, was one of the co-founders of OpenAI, refused external regulation for the AI used in Tesla cars, and sponsors the Institute, known for its black scenarios of the future.

It’s evident that the most effective way to protect ourselves is to stay informed about what’s happening.

Let me quote Yuval Noah Harari (who seemed to be among those who signed the open letter) on what he actually writes on his official channels: “The danger is that if we continue to invest too much in the development of AI and too little in the development of human consciousness, such a powerful technology can only serve to enhance human stupidity.”

Why to participate in Prototron – 10 recommendations from the finalists of the 29th batch of Prototron

Prototron 29 finalists shared their feedback on the recently completed Prototron programme. What were the experiences of the TOP 10 participating teams and why would they recommend others to take part in Prototron?

Force

“All the mentors, lectures and homework were very useful. They do take a lot of time, but with each step you can make your idea more concrete and better. It was interesting to see how different mentors approached from very different angles and gave different feedback.”

BatCycle

“The Prototron program provides an extremely quick overview of the startup world. Under the hands of good mentors, you will be immediately put on the right track. I can’t imagine anyone reading business books on top of managing a startup. All the information presented in the program was very well thought out.”

Kinola

“If you are a starting startup and want to develop your idea, find places and opportunities to attract investments, then Prototron is definitely a good program to be a part of. Ability to find good contacts. The best part of the Prototron program was the interaction with the mentors. For example, we received the necessary legal advice, which was a weak spot for us at the moment.”

Playerbank

“It was great that we were able to choose the mentors ourselves and thus also set the path that you will get from the program in the end. You learned a lot about your own product, how to pay attention to the necessary details, and describing your idea to others became easier and easier each time.”

ForQueen Bee

“The biggest lesson was getting everything done – the program itself was very good. The most useful topic for us turned out to be the involvement of funding.”

OG Sense

“The Prototron program is the most valuable for starting startups, but the startup has been operating for some time, then not all topics are no longer relevant. The mentoring part was very good and thorough, and new contacts were made.”

Wayren

“Prototron helped to contact the mentors and get very good feedback. If you have an idea, to build something, to prototype, that idea becomes clearer in Prototron. It’s like a milestone that will benefit.”

Banking

“Prototon’s mentors were of a very good standard. I’ve come across all of the topics in Prototron before, but now they’ve come together as one. Prototron isn’t about getting that prize money, it’s like a master’s degree that you don’t have to pay for. This is a free very high level school. If you complete this program, you will be a ready startup entrepreneur.”

Smarif

“There is nothing to lose. If at first Prototron seems formal and bureaucratic, in reality everything is quite different. The program has a very good emotion, everyone is very helpful and the mentors are also ready to think along at any time.”

EXAGRAPH

When applying for the Prototron program, you don’t have to have everything ready and settled. Here you will get an intensive study – a guide on how to proceed. This experience itself is already such a great value, perhaps winning is not the only goal. After Prototron, you have all the possibilities to find funding, people, a team, etc. In addition, you get a network of mentors who will help your idea take off.”

Prototron is a fund founded by Swedbank, TalTech and the Tehnopol Science and Business Park to finance prototypes of technological ideas so that world-changing ideas and products reach the market faster. By today, Prototron has financed 92 smart ideas with a total of more than 1.7 million euros and the teams have engaged more than 59 million euros as secondary investments.

Until December 14, the TOP 47 business ideas are participating Prototron audience votes for their favourite idea. Voting will take place on Prototron’s Facebook page, and the winner will receive a special prize.

According to Jana Budkovskaja, CEO of the Prototron Foundation, nearly half a hundred teams selected weeks ago have participated in a versatile mentoring program and acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to further develop their business idea. One of the teams’ last tasks is to precisely explain their idea to the so-called ordinary audience. “The public voting round gives the teams the necessary experience in positioning their idea and teaches them how to explain their worthy idea to people who are not deeply involved in startups or business. On the other hand, the vote provides a good opportunity to keep an eye on what is happening in the landscape of Estonian startups, because it can be assumed that many of the current startups will be large companies and employers in a few years. And if it gives an incentive to others to start their business as a start-up, then we can consider the voting of the competition a success,” explained Budkovskaja.

Voting takes place on Prototron’s Facebook page, where a pleasant business idea has to be “liked” – you can also choose several favourites – and the idea with the most “likes” receives the title of audience favourite and a special prize, i.e. passes to the next sTARTUp Day.

The finalists of the 29th round of Prototron will make their final sales pitch to the panel of experts on December 14 at 5 p.m., which can be watched live on Prototron’s Facebook page. Public voting ends an hour later, at 6 pm. The winners of the round will be announced on the evening of December 14 at the Prototron gala evening, where the 10th year of operation of the technological business ideas fund Prototron will be celebrated. In addition to the audience vote winner, the other best teams of the 29th round will also be awarded on the spot.
